Braise awoke at the commotion. His eyes snapped open and his breath caught. How had he slept? Had that been a worker? Yes, he could already smell the junk they left for the pets to eat. "Ari?" He turned his gaze, surprised to see the other laying so close to him. The boy was rubbing his head and sniffling. "Did he hurt you," he asked. He could see the way Ari's face scrunched ever so slightly.

Ari nodded slightly. "It-It is not... that bad though," he murmured. He fluttered the ruffled wing slightly. Some broken feathers fell to ground, making him wince. It hurt a little, but not too bad. Braise's injuries probably hurt more, so he knew he could live with it. "Does your side and wrist hurt?" he asked softly.

"Just a litte now..." Of course, he hadn't yet moved. He shifted and winced. His side was still killing him, but his wrist was alright now. The sleeping and staying off of it had done some good. Braise turned his eyes on Ari. "My side..that's it but..." He turned and reached out a hand and gently swiped it over the area where the broken feathers had fallen.

Ari's eyes fell to where Braise's hand went. He could not believe the worker had down that to him. His wings were one of things he liked about himself, and now one of them was all ruffled and losing a few feathers. Later he would have to try to fix it. After that he would just have to wait for them to grow back.
"They'll grow back...," he said softly, looking away to see what food they were given this time. It looked like moldy bread.

Braise followed the angels gaze and hummed in disgust. His appetite vanished and he forced himself onto his knees, pausing to let the pain pass. Bindings for his ribs would be nice, but there were none. Braise crouched on his haunches, nose curling at the food. "You'd think if they wanted to get rid of more pets they'd keep us up in good places....feed us good food..." This time he stood all the way and almost toppled over. He swore, when he was free, he was going to get back at every worker that dared lay a hand upon him....and Ari too. The tiny boy looked so adorable and hoplessly lost. Braise felt a sure of protection well up inside him. The small injury to silky wings showed quite well and the boy dusted off his pants, frustrated that he hadn't been up. The worker wouldn't have gotten a chance to even look the wrong way at Ari.

He watched Braise stand wobbly with concern. It was not a good idea to be walking around, but he supposed if the boy wanted to he could not stop him. Ari sat up, raising his wings unconsciously so they would not touch the ground. "I think that it costs too much... too much... gold," he said softly, repeating what he heard another pet saying. Being that the only thing he remembers in In-Between, he does not have a good understanding of currency. All he knew was that if you had a lot it got you good things, like edible food.
The angel stood up slowly. He had a little trouble balancing himself because his wings were so big, and he was feeling a little dizzy. He was okay in a few seconds though. "What is it? Bread...," he trailed off. Ari squinted his eyes. "What is this?" he asked, bending down to pick up a little red thing off the plate.

Braise frowned, thinking. "Well that could be it...but they get paid weel enough when they sell one of us..." He shook his head and when the tiny angel moved over towards the food, he followed. He stepped gingerly, afraid to jar his ribs.
"That's a good question...." Braise glanced over Ari's shoulder, raising a brow in consideration.

Ari sniffed the questionable piece of food, before quickly throwing it back on the plate. "Whatever it is, it spells gross," he muttered. He grabbed the bread, which would be enough for the two of them if the broke it in half and started picking at the mold. He could never get it completely off, but less was better than before. When the angel was happy with it he broke it in half.
"Braise," he said softly, handing him the half that was slightly bigger. Ari started eating his own piece, he was so hungry that it almost tasted good. Almost.

Braise took the offered food, smiling gently. Ari had tried so hard to remove the mold. "But you gave yourself the smaller pice," he murmured, " you'll be hungry later...I can..I can run days without food, you should eat more." He broke off the very end of his and held it back out to the angel, biting into what he had left, nose scrunching up. He was used to eating this but even then he couldn't stand the taste. Oh well, Ari had worked on it for them and he was going to finish it. Even stale, moldy bread would help his ribs heal in the long run.

Ari shook his head. "I'm not hurt though," he argued. "You need your strength if you're going to get better." The angel gently pushed Braise's hand away. It was nice of the anthro to do that for him, though. He nibbled on his piece of bread slowly in an attempt to savor the tast of food- not matter how unsatisfying it was. He gently pulled at his shirt idly, wondering if it would be stong enough to use as a wrap. The cloth started tearing even at the slight pressure. Ari sighed softly. So much for that idea.
His light brown eyes caught something moving around near the plate. It was a mouse. A little grey mouse with a twitchy nose. He smiled softly. It was so cute! And probably as hungry as them. Ari tore a piece of his bread, one without mold, and tossed it to to the mouse. He pouted when it ran away, but smiled again when it came back timidly. The mouse nibbled at the bread quickly. Ari chuckled. "Braise, look!" he said softly, pointing at the mouse.

Braise smiled. He'd never had anyone care and Ari was doing exactly that. It made him feel funny...warm and fuzzy. Braise Nicholau did not get warm and fuzzy feelings, he reminded himself as he took another bite of bread. He kept trying to convince himself of that when Ari called him. "Braise, look!" He did, face softening at Ari's expression, and the tiny mouse trying to cart off the piece of bread even as it nibbled it downto nothing.
The anthro kneeled beside Ari, looking up at him with a smile. "It seems I got put in here with two adorable room mates." He turned his gaze on the little mouse and place a few crumbs in his hand, gently holding it out. The mouse seemed wary at first, but soon hunger won out, he guessed. The tiny animal scurried over to him, timidly picking out the crumbs with lightning fast movements. Sufficently done, it washed its face, gave them both a farewell look and scurried off.

A light blush appeared on Ari's cheeks at Braise's statement. He watched the mouse in amusement until it left. "Mouses are so cute," he said softly as he sat on the floor next to the wolf boy. He brought his wing up to his face so he could study the damage. "Hmm," he mumbled. It was not that bad, just a bit ruffled in one spot. Ari smoothed it out as best he could, but it was still clear that his wing was not in the best of shape anymore. Oh well, there was nothing he could do.
"I wonder when we can go outside again?" he wondered out loud. He loved it out there.

"They are..." Braise stood back up, finished up his bread and went to look out the lone window. It was barred over and he could barely see anything, even standing on his tippytoes. "Good question. They hate me cause I fight back....it'll probably be awhile," he muttered. He turned back to Ari about to say something more when there was a small click and the door opened. Yet again guards entered only there were only two, and they didn't bear food or another prisoner. Instead they glared and motioned the two pets out.
"You have twenty minutes," one sneered.

In an unconscious effort to hide himself from the guards, Ari's wings circled around him slightly. The action affectively hid his face from view. The angel also stood close to Braise. He hoped none of the gaurds messed with the wolf boy. It would only make his injury worse, and that would be bad.
It was kind of funny how when he asked about going outside, that the guards came and said they could go out. It was almost like they were listening to them and actually doing what they wanted. The two men led them out into the fenced off area outside. There were a few other pets outside as well. When the guards left the wolf boy and angel alone, Ari let his wings fold behind him again.
He gave Braise a small smile. "I...I love outside," he said softly. Ari looked around a little. The sun was starting to dim now, so that meant it was almost night time. He sat down in an area that had some soft grass, pulling Braise down next to him gently. "Sometimes... I daydream about flying up, up into the sky! Away from this place...," he whispered, like he was telling a secret. And he pretty much was. If the guards heard that kind of talk, they would get angry.

Braise too stayed close to Ari, determined not to let the guards hurt the boy again. He looked so scared and vulnerable with his wings wound around his body. The anthro shot twin glares at the guards, jaw clenched as he passed them right behind his new friend. He could almost feel them wanting to hit him. Too bad, if they tried it he'd be sure to get angry. They didn't. It was almost as though they were merely watching, listening. Braise gladly sat beside Ari, grateful when the pressure was taken off of his ribs. "I love it too..." He smiled, finally getting to see the boy out in the light. Although there wasn't much light....Ari trully was adorable. The perfect person to protect. "I think we all dream of flight," he whispered back, eyes looking at the sky. "Maybe not like yours, cause I don't have wings," he smiled sheepishly, "just....i can't stand being here...." Half the time he didn't want to go on living anymore. He didn't want to be a pet to any master who was going to abuse him twice as much. He wanted to be free, to love who he wanted and to make any choice without fear of being beat.
