Nezzie sighed and pouted, staring up at the dreary, clouded sky. He crouched under a large tree and picked the meat from his sandwhich. He was hungry, but the bread was a funny color today. He learned a long time ago not to eat the funny colored bread; it made him sick.
He glanced over at a worker that was discplining another pet. The boy had apparently done something wrong, though Nez wouldn't doubt it if the worker was just bored and wanted something to hit.
Nez sighed silently and looked up at the tree he was sitting beneath. It was Spring, so it was covered with tiny, green bud things that would eventually turn into leaves and flowers. It was odd to see something actually growing; the tree seemed to be the only thing that was alive. I wonder how long I'll stay here for? I mean, there must be someone that wants me... right? he thought, wondering if, maybe, he was going to just grow up and die here.

Rin entered the In-Between. She had heard stories of the horrors of the In-Between. She had just passed them off as fiction. How could Others be treated as horribly as the stories suggested? Some of her younger prisoners had been put into the In-Between as punishment for their crimes, but she hadn't actually travelled there. She had just turned them over to the authorities and they placed them in the In-Between.
What awaited her were horrors that she only imagine. There were Others being beaten for seemingly no reason at all. She bit on her lip and clenched her fists to keep from attacking the Pets' attackers. She had no authority in this place. If she were to defend a Pet, she would most likely be taken into custody. All she could do was talk to some of the Pets and see who would be the lucky one she would rescue.
Rin was here because she needed someone to travel with. Having a Pet would make life easier for the Pet and her. The Pet would have a life as an equal to her, just legally treated as a Pet. In return, she would be more safe traveling. It's useful to have another set of eyes to look out for you, especially if you're a bounty hunter.
Rin glanced over at large tree with a young fox or wolf anthro boy under it. His silver hair flowed gently in the breeze. His light lavender eyes seemed full of despair. 'Maybe he would be a good travelling partner...' she thought. She approched the boy and knelt next to him. She greeted him with a smile. "Hello, what's your name? I'm Rin. Would you like something else other than that nasty looking sandwich?" She asked as she reached into her bag.

Nez jumped and blinked when someone started to talk to him. He blinked up at the woman above him and stared at her. "...Huh? What?" he mumbled quietly. "I shouldn't take anything from you... If a worker finds out, they'll think I'm ungreatful," he explained quietly. Even though he said this, his nose twitched in anticipation and his eyes trailed to where the woman's hand was searching through her bag.

Rin placed her other hand on her knee and sighed. 'What the heck are they teaching these people? This inhumanity is unbelievable... Saying the workers will think that he's ungreatful is probably his way of saying they will abuse him more.'
She pulled out an apple from her bag and closed it. She then took some water from her bottle and but a little on the apple. She then dried it with one of her shirt's long, silver sleeves. "You'll be ungreatful if you don't take it," Rin said with a stern look. "I'll just move over here so those workers can't see."
Rin looked behind her and moved over to obstruct the worker's view of the boy. She held out the apple to him gently so her claws wouldn't penatrate the fruit. "Hey, you still haven't told me your name," Rin lightend her expression.

Nezzie's eyes widened. She was going to hit him, too?! He hesitantly reached out and took the... thing. He had no idea what it was, but if she was eating it, it had to be good.... right? He took a bit out of it and blinked. "Woah... it'sch gud," he mumbled around his food, "Eh... Schanksoo...."

A look of pity fell over Rin's face. He was scared of what she might do to her. She felt like smacking her head against the tree for being so insensitive. The harrassment the Pets were going through really got her blood boiling. 'Don't take it out on him, you jerk! Once you get outside, you can yell curses and crap at those stupid workers. Save your anger.'
She extended her hand and patted him on the head. "You're certainly welcome, anytime," she said with a warm smile on her face to cover her angst for the workers.
Rin made herself comfortable and sat down on the ground. She looked up at the boy. "What's your story?"

Nezzie blinked, tilting his head after he swallowed. "Story...?" he mumbled in an unsure tone. He had no idea what the lady meant; his story was "In-Between... the end."

Rin was shocked. "In-Between is all you know? You haven't ever had any family?" She couldn't imagine life without having a family. Sure, she was kicked out years ago, but there were valid reasons behind that.
"Have you ever seen the outside world?!" She stopped herself from getting too excited. "I'm sorry for overreacting and asking too many questions," she said quietly.

Nez blinked and pouted. "I'm sorry. I didn't know.... I guess I did have a family... but they all left before I can remember....," he mumbled shyly, ducking away from the woman.

'Come on, Rin! Focus your negative energy into a little ball and store it for a while. Don't take it out on this fragil boy... Use it on someone else,' Rin said to herself in her head.
"Hey, I'm sorry for my blasts of remarks. I'm not meaning to scare you," she paused for a moment. "How would you like to see all you have been missing out on?" She smiled at him.

Nez blinked, uncurling himself and looking at Rin curiously. "What do you mean," he asked, tilting his head.

"I'm talking about seeing what's outside the walls of this prison. How would you like to travel all over the country and see different sites? What I came here to do was find someone to travel with me, not just some personal slave. How about it?" Rin redirected some of her energy that was leaking out into her voice.

Nez's eyes lit up. "Really?!" he whispered excitedly. If he spoke any louder, he thought he might yell, and he didn't want to get in trouble for being loud. "You really want me too?"

"You really shouldn't feed things that don't deserve the good treatment."
He was standing over them both, looking bored and irritated. He hated people who pitied others. But he hated the people that others pitied even more. That was probably why he lasted out on people when they tried to help him or brought up his faults. Maybe that was also why he was now an only child? The raven haired man snorted and flipped some of the long strands of dark hair that had come loose of the tie he'd pulled in his hair back in back over his shoulder. He had been watching them. Well, watching the small fox-anthro to be exact. It wasn't that he had any actual intentions of buying the boy for his own. He had the money to do it, yes. He just didn't have the heart. Anyways, Kodak just enjoyed watching, though some of us might call it stalking, his quarry from afar. Nonchalantly he turned his head in the direction of the female and droned;
"Do you plan on buying it?"

Nezzie pouted, shying away slightly from the man standing above them. He wanted to yell out that just because he was a pet... that didn't make him any less alive. The man was treating him like he was human or something. However, Nez just held his tongue; he didn't want to get in trouble.
He couldn't help but stare at the man. The man was beautiful! Though, Nez supposed that wasn't the right word for someone like him. He quickly turned his eyes away from the man. He didn't want to be attracted to someone that was a jerk; besides, he'd probably never see him again anyway...
